While compact SUVs are in great demand now, with many models available, two vehicles that have been around for years are the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. And they continue to sell very well. However, the best new compact SUV isn’t the RAV4 or CR-V, according to U.S. News & World Report. It’s the fun to drive 2023 Mazda CX-5.

The Toyota RAV4 is more popular than other compact SUVs available. Not only is it the best-selling model in the segment, but it’s also the world’s top-selling SUV. The Honda CR-V is also a huge success. Additionally, it’s a more appealing choice with a redesign for the 2023 model year.

However, according to U.S. News, the best new compact SUV isn’t the 2023 Toyota RAV4 or the 2023 Honda CR-V. It’s the 2023 Mazda CX-5.

In the U.S. News rankings, the CX-5 earned the top spot. The 2023 Hyundai Tucson and the CR-V placed second and third, respectively. Also, the RAV4 is eighth on the list.

Here are the 10 best new compact SUVs in 2023, according to U.S. News:

There are multiple reasons why the 2023 Mazda CX-5 earned the best new compact SUV honor from U.S. News — beating out the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and other models. And the biggest reason is its fun to drive nature. The CX-5 is one of the most enjoyable to drive in the segment.

The Mazda compact SUV is agile with responsive handling. This makes drivers look forward to maneuvering through curves and around corners. It also has sure-footed braking and precise steering. Plus, the suspension provides a nice balance between ride comfort and athleticism.

Another contributing factor to the top ranking of the CX-5 is the excellent performance, particularly with the optional turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It delivers 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque — resulting in a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.2 seconds.

Additional reasons for the top ranking of the 2023 CX-5

In addition to the enjoyable driving experience, there are other reasons why the 2023 CX-5 earned the top spot for new compact SUVs. This includes an upscale interior, especially for the upper trims. The CX-5 has one of the most luxurious cabins in the segment — with a more premium look and feel than in the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

Also, the Mazda SUV comes standard with many features, particularly for driving assistance technologies. This results in a more convenient and safer ride.

Furthermore, the CX-5 is affordable — with a starting price of only $26,700 MSRP. In comparison, the starting cost is $27,975 MSRP for the RAV4 and $28,410 MSRP for the CR-V.

According to U.S. News, the best new compact SUV isn’t the 2023 Toyota RAV4 or the 2023 Honda CR-V. It’s the 2023 Mazda CX-5. With its fun to drive nature, upscale interior, many standard features, and affordable price, the CX-5 is the top choice in the segment.
