In an automotive world increasingly filled with crossovers and SUVs, the Toyota Corolla and the Hyundai Elantra are keeping the sedan torch lit. Both compact cars have many strong points. However, the 2023 Toyota Corolla conquers the 2023 Hyundai Elantra in one huge way. It’s more reliable.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla continues to live up to the nameplate’s reputation of reliability. Those who get the compact car will likely be treated to a vehicle that lasts many miles and years — with minimal problems. And multiple publications rate the Corolla as more reliable than the 2023 Hyundai Elantra.

For example, J.D. Power gives the Corolla a “great” reliability rating of 85/100. However, the Elantra only has an “average” rating of 78/100. Also, per USA Today, the Corolla fares very well on the Consumer Reports most reliable car list, with the hybrid version placing first — and the fully gas-powered model taking the seventh spot. However, the Hyundai Elantra didn’t make the list.

The high-level reliability gives the Corolla several benefits over the Elantra. This includes fewer and less severe repairs, resulting in lower ownership costs. You can also have the reassurance of dependably making it to your destination. There are fewer hassles too. Other benefits include a safer ride, consistent performance, and longevity.

One of the selling points of the 2023 Toyota Corolla and the 2023 Hyundai Elantra is their affordability. And for the Corolla, this affordability isn’t just for the purchase price — but also for vehicle ownership. The high-level reliability makes the Toyota compact car more affordable to own.

According to RepairPal, the average annual cost to repair the Corolla is $362, compared to $452 for the Elantra. Also, these repairs tend to be less severe for the Corolla. It’s a severe problem 7% of the time, compared to 9% for the Elantra. Considering high inflation, it’s nice to have a car that won’t do too much damage to your bank account.

Other strengths of the Toyota Corolla over the Hyundai Elantra

The 2023 Corolla has some other strengths over the 2023 Elantra. This includes a more powerful base-level engine output. The Corolla’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generates 169 horsepower, while the Elantra’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 147 horsepower. Plus, the Toyota compact car has a new 300-horsepower GR Corolla “hot hatch,” which is more powerful than anything the Elantra offers.

Also, unlike the Elantra, the Corolla has an efficient hybrid model. It gets an estimated fuel economy of up to 53 city/46 highway mpg. And for the Elantra, the highest gas mileage it achieves is 33 city/43 highway mpg.

Additionally, the Corolla is a safer small car. It earned a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick award. However, with lower safety and crash test scores, the Elantra wasn’t honored by IIHS.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla is more reliable than the 2023 Hyundai Elantra, which enables the popular compact car to conquer in a huge way. This high-level reliability has numerous benefits, including lower repair costs, longevity, safety, performance, and fewer hassles.
