2023 Subaru Outback Limited vs. Onyx Edition

If you’re interested in buying a new compact crossover, the 2023 Subaru Outback is a popular option. It’s among the most reliable, safe, tech-filled models and isn’t too expensive. As a result, owners love the Outback, which is synonymous with small family SUVs. However, there are many trims in the Outback lineup. How do you know which one to buy? The Limited and Onyx Edition are two of the best selections, but is one better? Are the two trims almost the same? We compare prices, equipment, and more.

One of the essential parts of buying a vehicle is the price. Regardless of how excellent it is, if it costs too much, it doesn’t matter. Fortunately, that’s not the case for the 2023 Subaru Outback. As we mentioned previously, the price is a significant reason for its popularity. Buying the Base model starts as low as $29,620. Moving up the lineup, you’ll find a $31,920 Premium model, followed by two of the best available.

According to Car and Driver, first is the cheaper Onyx Edition, which costs $34,720. Following it is the Limited model, starting at $36,520. Both models are excellent choices because they provide much more equipment than lower trims without breaking the bank. However, the Onyx Edition and Limited models are unique from each other, so each might be better for certain buyers. Additionally, higher trims like the Wilderness and Touring models get close to or exceed the $40,000 mark. We can’t speak for everyone, but we prefer our Subaru Outback for under $37,000.

First, it’s important to note that all 2023 Subaru Outback models come with the same engine and all-wheel drive. Only the Wilderness model gets a more potent unit under the hood. The Onyx Edition and Limited models use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine good for 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, both include all features present with the Premium trim.

For example, heated/power-folding exterior mirrors, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

For the Onyx Edition, it builds on the Premium model in a few ways. It gains essentials like more driving modes, a hands-free power tailgate, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and evasive steering assist.

Comparatively, the Limited model adds a bit more. 18-inch wheels, driver’s seat memory settings, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated rear outboard seats, leather upholstery, a Harmon Kardon audio system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and rear automatic braking enter this version of the Outback.

Which 2023 Subaru Outback trim is better?

At the end of the day, buyers can only choose one of these excellent 2023 Subaru Outback trims. We’d recommend the Limited model. It adds tons of features to the Premium trim, making it a more luxurious and tech-filled compact crossover. Additionally, it doesn’t cost much more than the lower trims, which is surprising. Only a $2,000 difference separating these trims will make it difficult to see a difference when it comes to a monthly payment.

Some experts, like Edmunds, like the Onyx Edition XT better. Simply put, the XT variant is the same as the standard version, but it uses the turbocharged engine standard on the Wilderness trim. Unfortunately, we find it challenging to recommend it because it costs more. Pricing is most important, and the base engine gets the job done. If money is no object, the Touring or Wilderness trims with the turbocharged engine are a better choice.
