Sunday, August 29th, we will be setting up and having a trial run of the track and doing some lottery ball matchup rounds. This has been over a year in the making/planning, absorbing some knowledge, studying what others have done and are doing, and trying to get the ball rolling, and the feet off of the ground. I’m pretty stoked! I’ve posted in a few areas, dropped off flyers at the LHS, and hope at least a few people aside from our normal crew will come out and give it a try. This is just a start, and it’s not the official series just yet. That will come next.
I spent a day sweating in the hot sun working on the speed trap, and got it finished, as planned.
At double it’s previous width, it’s now more of a “joy” to run through instead of a nervous torture! It’s now even more easily portable – though there are now of course two extra pieces to carry. I even built the second section of the starting ramp so that you can now drive your truck up on it. I have been testing the final layout this week, getting the dimensions set completely and “official”. That’s not to say that after this trial on the 29th that a few things don’t get moved a bit, but after that, these specs will be set, and we will always use them for this series going forward.
I wound up settling on a layout and dimension that is a bit more symmetrical than I had originally designed/tweaked in various revisions. The straights are all close to 40 feet, which is about as big as I wanted to go, as to keep depth perception good. This was a little smaller than the Versus event I attended, and a little bigger than Trigger king, or maybe very close to the size of their various layouts. I widened the overall track to make getting around the turns a bit easier, and moved the small ramps out a little. Each turn is aligned with the other now.
I ran both of my trucks on this for a bit, and it felt really good. I will be raking and loosening the dirt up the day of the race – currently it’s hard, dry, and slick. Launching off the podium is a blast, you can really get some good momentum here and that helps getting to that first turn fast on the slick dirt. I will also be updating some other things on this page in anticipation of this event.
